People and Pattern

In fine art I created two little paper men and I took them around college taking photos of them on patterned backgrounds. I made the paper men white so they stood out more on patterned and colourful backgrounds, I thought it would be too much if they were any other colour. I wanted the photo’s to tell a story of the journey the paper men had around college.

Ceramic bowl

In Ceramics I did practice pieces before I started my bowl. I practiced different types of mark making for sgraffito on little pieces of clay that I put green slip onto. I used different types of glazes and under glazes on my practice pieces to see what looked nice and went well so I could used the glazes on my final piece. Once I was happy with my five sample pieces I rolled out clay using guides and a rolling pin and placed and fed it gently into the press mould. When the clay was placed inside the press mould I used wire to cut the edges of the clay, then I got a rubber kidney and some water to smooth down the clay which was inside the press mould and left it to dry for a bit. When it dried I chose green slip to cover all of the clay because my chosen colour was green so it went perfectly well with my collection and project. I got some carving tools and a soft paint brush so I could carve and sgraffito in to the clay when it was leather hard, I used the paint brush to get rid of small bits of clay on the design so I wouldn't mark the clay getting it off. Once the clay dried more I carefully took it out of the press mould and used a damp sponge to clean and smooth the edges of the bowl ready to be placed into the kiln. I used copper oxide and a yellow under glaze pen to decorate the bowl and placed a good thick coat of clear glaze on top of the bowl. I really liked the way my bowl turned out and I think the design went well on the bowl, I think I could improve my bowl by being more careful putting glaze on the bowl.
